Mr. Diefenbaker was Progressive Conservative Prime Minister from 1957-63, lost the 1963 election to Mr. Lester Pearson, and finally gave up the leadership of his party in 1967.

SYNOPSIS: Mr. John Diefenbaker, the 76-year-old former Prime Minister of Canada, was admitted to hospital in Wrexham, Wales on Wednesday, after being taken ill while on a holiday visit to the U.K. In this library film shot in 1963, Mr. Diefenbaker is seen addressing an eve-of-poll Canadian general election rally. He was Progressive Conservative Prime Minister between 1957 and 1963.

A hospital spokesman said Mr. Diefenbaker is under observation and suffering from an abdominal condition. There has been no indication so far of the seriousness of the illness.

Mr. Diefenbaker remained active in politics during the last few years, although he gave up the leadership of the Conservative Party in 1967. Last year he made a special visit to Taiwan as part of his campaign of opposition to the Canadian Government's decision to establish diplomatic relations with the People's Republic of China. He met the Taiwan Foreign Minister Wei Teo Ming and Generalissimo Chiang Kai Shek, but his trip did little to prevent Canada's new Prime Minister Mr. Trudeau welcoming the first ambassador of the People's Republic in Ottawa in July 1971.
