  • Description

Egyptian Prime Minister Mamdouh Salem opened a conference of the General committee of All African Churches Council (AACC) in Cairo on Wednesday (18 February).

The AACC embraces 118 churches in 31 African countries and the conference is designed to discuss the forging of closer ties between the various African religions and between African and Arab churches.

Premier Salem read out a message of welcome from Egyptian President Anwar Sadat when he officially opened the conference.

The message paid tribute to African countries' support of the Arab cause by breaking diplomatic relations with Israel and condemning that country's "aggressive expansionist policy".

Pope Shenouda III, Egypt's Coptic Orthodox Patriarch, delivered one of the first addresses and spoke on Africa's struggle against colonialism.

"Africa suffered much from colonialism like Jerusalem which has suffered and is still suffering from the Jews," he said.

The conference, which is also being attended by observers from the Middle East, Europe and America, is expected to last a week
