WORK HAS BEEN COMPLETED ON A BIG BRIDGE ACROSS THE SHIRE (PRON. SHIREE) RIVER, ABOUT?

  • Description

WORK HAS BEEN COMPLETED ON A BIG BRIDGE ACROSS THE SHIRE (PRON. SHIREE) RIVER, ABOUT 30 MILES (48 KMS) FROM BLANTYRE IN THE CHIKWAWA AREA OF MALAWI. THE BRIDGE REPLACES AN OLD FERRY SERVICE AND GREATLY IMPROVES THE ROUTE SOUTH TO THE SUCOMA SUGAR PLANTATIONS, A GAME RESERVE AND THE WHOLE OF THE LOWER SHIRE AREA.

MALAWI IS ANXIOUS TO REPLACE ALL ITS FERRIES FOLLOWING THE SINKING OF A FERRY ON THE SHIRE RIVER NEAR LIWONDE IN 1965, WHEN A NUMBER OF PEOPLE LOST THEIR LIVES. THE CHIKWAWA FERRY HAS BEEN KEPT IN OPERATION, CHUGGING BACKWARDS AND FORWARDS ACROSS THE RIVER, DURING THE THREE YEARS SPENT BUILDING THE BRIDGE, BUT NOW GOES INTO RETIREMENT. PLANNED COST OF THE BRIDGE WAS ABOUT GBP400,000 STERLING.

THE NEW BRIDGE IS 24 FEET (7 METRES) WIDE AND 640 FEET (ABOUT 200 METRES) LONG. IT WAS OPENED TO TRAFFIC LAST WEEK, NOT OFFICIALLY. THE OFFICIAL OPENING IS EXPECTED TO BE PERFORMED SOON BY PRESIDENT BANDA.
