  • Description

The Marcel Dassault Company -- makers of the French contender in the current competition for a major NATO aircraft replacement -- challenged on Wednesday (9 April) the findings of Defence Ministers in the four purchasing countries that the American F-16 fighter 'plane had undeniable advantages over its French rival.

    M. Claude-Benno Vallieres, Chairman of the Dassault Group, which builds the Mirage F-1 fighter, also said it would be wrong to assume -- as many in France have -- that the French 'plane had lost its chances of being chosen for what has been called "the arms deal of the century".

    M. Vallieres told newsmen he based his hopes on statements by Dutch and Belgian Defence Ministers that they were still examining "special economic and industrial aspects" of the deal, involving some 350 aircraft.

Last week, Defence Ministers of the purchasing countries -- Belgium, Holland, Norway and Denmark -- agreed that the American 'plane had undisputed performances and cost advantages over other contenders.

But M. Vallieres said: "You cannot make a comparison between the French aircraft -- which is already in production and flying -- and an experimental American 'plane still in its research-and-development stage.

In Brussels, a NATO spokesman has said that no final decision has yet been taken on a replacement aircraft for the Starfighter now being used by the four member states.

Replacing the Starfighters is expected to cost at least 2,000 million US dollars (833 million pounds sterling).

    M. Vallieres concluded his news conference by saying he had every confidence in the final outcome of the financial and military assessment by the four purchasers -- "Until the final contract is given, we are not prepared to give up in despair", he added.
