  • Description

IN ONE OF THE CLOSEST NEW YORK ELECTIONS ON RECORD, REPUBLICAN CONGRESSMAN MR. JOHN V. LINDSAY, TODAY (WEDNESDAY) BROKE 20 YEARS OF DEMOCRAT MAYORAL CONTROL OF THE CITY BY DEFEATING MR. ABRAHAM BEAME. LONDON-BORN MR. BEAME CONCEDED DEFEAT FIVE HOURS AFTER THE POLLS CLOSED. RETURNS AT THIS POINT SHOWED MR. LINDSAY LEADING BY SOME 81,000 VOTES, WITH 89 PER CENT OF THE POLL COUNTED.

THE NEW YORK MAYORALTY IS REGARDED AS ONE OF THE NATIONS' MOST IMPORTANT OFFICES AFTER THE PRESIDENCY.

MR. BEAME SAID HE BELIEVED THE MAIN FACTOR IN HIS DEFEAT WAS THE ENTRY OF A THIRD CANDIDATE, REPUBLICAN CONSERVATIVE MR. WILLIAM F. BUCKLEY, WHO POLLED ABOUT 13 PER CENT OF THE VOTE. MR. BUCKLEY ADMITTED THAT THE MAIN REASON IN RUNNING WAS TO DETRACT VOTES FROM MR. LINDSAY.

SUCCESSOR TO RETIRING MAYOR ROBERT WAGNER, MR. LINDSAY IS A 43 YEAR OLD GRANDSON OF A BRITISH IMMIGRANT FROM THE ISLE OF WIGHT. HE STOOD ON A SO-CALLED "FUSION TICKET", COMBINING LIBERAL REPUBLICANS AND LIBERAL DEMOCRATS. NEW YORK'S LAST REPUBLICAN MAYOR, FIORELLO LA GUARDIA, ALSO STOOD ON SUCH A PLATFORM IN 1941.

THE ELECTION HAS NATIONAL SIGNIFICANCE IN THAT NEW YORK CITY HAS THREE REGISTERED DEMOCRATIC VOTERS FOR EACH REGISTERED REPUBLICAN VOTER. REPUBLICAN PARTY OFFICIALS SAID AFTER THE ELECTION THAT MR. LINDSAY WOULD BE HIGH IN THE RUNNING AS A CONTENDER FOR THE UNITED STATES PRESIDENCY IN 1968 OR 1972.

MR. LINDSAY GRADUATED FROM YALE UNIVERSITY IN 1943, AND SERVED AS A GUNNERY OFFICER IN WORLD WAR 11. AFTER HIS NAVY DISCHARGE, HE ENTERED YALE LAW SCHOOL AND WAS ADMITTED TO THE BAR IN 1949.

LATER HE WON THE REPUBLICAN NOMINATION TO CONTEST THE SO-CALLED "SILK-STOCKINGS" CONGRESSIONAL DISTRICT OF MANHATTAN'S WEALTHY EAST SIDE AND CAPTURED THE ELECTION.

HE WAS RE-ELECTED TO THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES BY SUBSTANTIAL MARGINS IN 1960, 1962 AND 1964.

MARRIED, WITH FOUR CHILDREN, MR. LINDSAY WILL RECEIVE AN ANNUAL MAYORAL SALARY OF ABOUT GBP18,000 STERLING.
