  • Description

SIX FRENCH AQUANAUTS ARE BACK ON DRY LAND AFTER SPENDING THREE WEEKS ON THE MEDITERRANEAN SEA-BED. THEY CAME OUT OF THEIR BATHY SCAPHE, YESTERDAY (SUNDAY) AT MONTE CARLO AND WERE GREETED BY THEIR CHIEF, THE FRENCH UNDERWATER EXPLORER, COMMANDER COUSTEAU.

THE MEN WERE NOT ALLOWED TO COME OUT OF THEIR UNDERWATER HOME STRAIGHT AWAY. AFTER RISING FROM THE DEPTHS, THEY SPENT THREE DAYS INSIDE -- AT THE SURFACE -- TO AVOID GETTING DIVER'S BENDS.

THE DIVING BELL WAS DESIGNED BY COUSTEAU. DURING THEIR TIME UNDER THE WATER, HE MAINTAINED A DIRECT TELEVISION LINK WITH THEM FROM HIS RESEARCH SHIP CALYPSO, MOORED IN MONTE CARLO HARBOUR.

THE AQUANAUTS WERE IN GOOD SPIRITS AFTER THEIR SPELL AT 330 FEET (100 METRES) OFF ST. JEAN CAP FERRAT. THEY SAID THEY FELT THE EXPERIMENT HAD GONE WELL. THEY WERE NEVERTHELESS GLAD TO BE BACK ON LAND. A LARGE CROWD WATCHED AS THEY STEPPED ASHORE.

THE 150-TON DIVING BELL WILL BE TOWED TO MARSEILLES. COMMANDER COUSTEAU SAID IT WOULD PROBABLY BE USED AGAIN FOR FURTHER EXPERIMENTS INTO UNDERWATER LIFE.
