  • Description

THE ROAD LINK BETWEEN TANZANIA AND ZAMBIA WAS RE-OPENED TODAY (FRIDAY) AFTER BEING CLOSED FOR THREE DAYS BECAUSE OF DAMAGE CAUSED BY TORRENTIAL RAINS. A TEMPORARY CULVERT HAS BEEN BUILT WHICH SHOULD HELP CEASE THE CRITICAL SITUATION FOLLOWING THE DISRUPTION OF VITAL ROAD AND RAIL LINKS BETWEEN ZAMBIA AND THE ATLANTIC OCEANS.

TODAY TRAFFIC, INCLUDING 30 TRUCKS CARRYING COPPER FROM ZAMBIA, CROSSED A TEMPORARY CULVERT AT A POINT 40 MILES (64 KMS) FROM THE COAST. WHERE A BRIDGE WAS WASHED AWAY IN A TORRENTIAL DOWNPOUR ON TUESDAY.

WHEN THE BRIDGE WAS WASHED AWAY, MORE THAN A HUNDRED VEHICLES, INCLUDING THE 30 TRUCKS WHICH CROSSED TODAY, WERE STUCK ON THE WEST SIDE OF THE RIVER. DOZENS OF WORKMEN WERE TRANSPORTED TO THE AREA AND WORK ON THE TEMPORARY CULVERT WAS BEGUN ALMOST IMMEDIATELY. A BAILEY BRIDGE IS ALSO REPORTED TO BE ON ITS WAY FROM THE NORTHERN REGION OF TANGA.

A SECOND ROAD HAS ALSO BEEN CLOSED TO TRAFFIC FOR SOME TIME, ALSO BECAUSE OF FLOODING, AND IN THE WAKE OF REPORTED SABOTAGE IN ANGOLA NEAR THE CONGO-KINSHASA BORDER WHEN PART OF THE BENGUELA RAILWAY TRACK WAS BLOWN UP.

ZAMBIA'S VITAL COPPER EXPORTS, WHICH NORMALLY TRAVEL THROUGH TANZANIA, ARE HAVING TO BE RE-ROUTED, MAINLY THROUGH RHODESIA BECAUSE OF THE CRISIS CAUSED BY COMMUNICATIONS DISRUPTION, AND MALAWI HAS ALSO OFFERED TO HELP MOVE THE VITAL IMPORTS AND EXPORTS WHICH ARE BEING HELD UP AT VARIOUS POINTS.

IN THE FLOODING, TANZANIA'S TELEPHONE SYSTEM HAS ALSO BEEN BADLY HIT, AND ENGINEERS ARE WORKING TO TRACE REPAIR BREAKDOWNS. THEIR WORK, HOWEVER, HAS BEEN HINDERED BY THE GEOGRA OF THE AREA, WITH MANY OF THE LINES TRAVELLING THROUGH DENSE FORESTS WHERE TREES HAVE BEEN BROUGHT DOWN UNDER THE TREMENDOUS WEIGHT OF THE TORRENTIAL RAINS.
