  • Description

South Vietnamese Vice-President Nguyen Cao Ky said on Thursday (12 August) he was still in the running for Presidential elections in October despite his exclusion from a list of candidates published last week.

Mr Ky accused President Nguyen Van Thieu of "using the courts to eliminate opposition and rig the election."
The flamboyant Vice-President made the remarks at a press conference in the Presidential Palace. He arrived by helicopter to present what observers called a public appeal rather than a legal appeal against a Supreme Court ruling last week excluding him from the Presidential race. The 41-year-old former Air Vice Marshal did not explain how he intended to stay in the election.

Asked by a reporter if there was any real possibility of a coup, Mr. Ky replied: "Yes, if the elections are rigged." The Vice-President was generally reluctant to talk about recent rumours of a coup but he did say that the rumours ware spread by officials of President Thieu to show dissention and to give a possible excuse for repressions.
