    On Monday (April 2), two ships of the Australian Navy sailed into Karachi Harbour, one of the Indian Ocean ports they are visiting on a goodwill tour. They are the guided missile destroyer, Her Majesty's Australian Ship Perth, and the destroyer escort, H.M.A.S. Derwent.

    The ships fired a salute of 21 guns which was returned by Pakistan Navy Guns on Quasim Fort. Pakistani journalists came on board to ask questions about the equipment and capabilities of the ships.

    On their three-month tour, the ships have already visited Mauritius, Kenya, Ethiopia, Bahrain and Iran. They go on to Sri Lanka, India, Indonesia, and the Seychelles before returning home. In announcing the cruise, the Deputy Prime Minister of Australia, Mr. Lance Barnard, had expressed the hope that it would help recognition of the common interests of Australia and countries bordering the Indian Ocean.
