  • Description

Visnews cameraman Durgadas Chatterji, a West Bengali from Calcutta, has just returned to India from a three-day solo journey through the Sylhet and Commilla districts of East Pakistan, relying for transport on members of Sheikh Mujibur Rahman's "Liberation" army.

The villages he filmed were in East Pakistani hands, but had been damaged by fighting and partially burnt by Government forces as they withdrew from outlying areas to their garrisons.

This production contains film from Commilla district, showing fires still burning in a distant village, refugees leaving another-- Bishnupur--and fire damage in a third--Bibir Bazar.

Latest reports indicate that West Pakistan troops, helped by reinforcements flown in to key airports, may now have begun to break out of their garrisons to attack the main regional centres, including the towns of Sylhet and Commilla.

If this is so, areas such as those on this film may soon see heavy fighting, and may not be accessible to cameramen for some time to come.
