Background: A brief ceremony, highlighted by exploding fire-crackers, marked the opening on Monday (15 October) of the Canton Trade Fair. Over 20,000 foreign buyers are expected to attend. It is the 34th trade fair held in Canton since 1957.

The seven trading sections at the fair cover everything from machinery to cereals. There were some new items on display, particularly in the field of electronics. There were also plenty of the traditional handicraft items to attract the buyers.

7,000 people attended a first-night banquet at the Tung Fang Hotel. Mr. Chen Yu, the fair's director, welcomed the visitors. He told them that the fair had consistently adhered to the country's policy on foreign trade. He said the policy was based on a principle of equality, mutual benefit and mutual help between China and other countries. Several of the speakers at the banquet expressed the hope that the fair would promote trade and friendship.

Among the visitors on the first day were trade delegates from Guyana, Mali, Australia, and Burma. Also there was the Mayor of Helsinki, Mr. Teuvo Aura.

SYNOPSIS: China's 1973 Autumn Export Commodities Fair opened in Canton on Monday. It was the thirty-fourth trade fair to be held in Canton since 1957.

The organisers of the fair are expecting over twenty thousand visitors, most of them buyers from China's one-hundred-and-fifty trading partners around the world.

The fair opened on Monday morning, with a ceremony highlighted by exploding fire-crackers.

There are seven trading sections at the fair, displaying everything from machinery to cereals. Thousands of samples of export goods are being shown at the fair, coming from all over The Peoples Republic of China. Some new items were shown for the first time, especially in the field of electronics.

There were also displays of traditional Chinese handiwork to interest buyers.

Over seven thousand guests attended a banquet in Canton's Tung Fang Hotel on Monday night. Many Chinese officials were at the banquet, including the Deputy Minister of Foreign Trade, Mr. Chen Shu-Fu, who proposed a toast to the guests.

Mr. Chen Yu, the Director of the Trade Fair, welcomed his guests. He told them that the fair reflected his country's policy on foreign trade. The policy was he said, based on a principle of equality. Through mutual help, China and other countries would supply each other's needs. After the banquet, there was a performance of a modern opera.
