    Uruguay's security forces seized arms, a light boat, an aircraft and various vehicles in a series of raids on the banned Communist Party headquarters in Montevideo on Tuesday (30 December).

    The Government announced that among those arrested as a result of the raids were Party President Jose Luis Massera, and Propaganda Secretary Vladimir Ilich Turiansky.

    The Government said the party had planned a series of guerrilla actions in the country.

    The raids also uncovered a "prison" for kidnap victims in a northern Montevideo suburb.

    The Communist Party was banned by the military-backed Government of President Juan Maria Bordadberry two years ago, shortly after he closed parliament and began ruling by decree.

    Senor Massera was a member of the country's congress when it closed down in 1973 when President Boredaberry seized power.

    The haul of arms includes all types of hand guns and rifles, mortars, grenades and radio and surgical equipment.

    SYNOPSIS: These arms were seized in a series of raids by Uruguay's security forces on hide-outs of the Communist Party, banned in the country.

    As a result of the raids, the government said it had smashed the leadership of the clandestine party. These arrested included party leader Jose Massera and Propaganda secretary Vladimir Turiansky.

    Senor Massera was a member of congress before it was close down in nineteen seventy three when President Juan Bordaberry seized power, with military backing. He became leader after the arrest of his predecessor, Rodney Arismendi.

    The raids uncovered a "prison" for kidnap victims in a house in a northern suburb of Montevideo. The weapons were concealed in several houses in the capital.

    The Communist party was banned by President Bordaberry shortly after he closed parliament and began ruling by decree. Since the arrests the party had ordered his officials to leave the country, the government said.
