Background: SOUTH AFRICAN GARY PLAYER, SEEKING HIS THIRD SUCCESSIVE VICTORY IN THE EVENT, BEAT AMERICAN GAY BREWER AT THE 39TH HOLE AFTER A TITANIC FIRST ROUND MATCH IN THE GBP16,000 STERLING PICCADILLY WORLD MATCH-PLAY GOLF CHAMPIONSHIP AT WENTWORTH TODAY (THURSDAY).

THE MATCH ENDED IN PLAYER'S FAVOUR AFTER A DISPUTE OVER THE SITING OF THE HOLE ON THE DECIDING GREEN. AFTER BOTH PLAYERS HAD HIT THEIR DRIVES THEY NOTICED THAT THE ORIGINAL HOLE HAD BEEN FILLED IN AND ANOTHER OUT IN READINESS FOR TOMORROW'S MATCHES.

BREWER, WINNER OF THE WORLD RECORD FIRST PRIZE OF NEARLY GBP20,000 STERLING IN THE ALCAN GOLFER OF THE YEAR EVENT ON MONDAY (9 OCT), REFUSED TO PLAY UNTIL THE ORIGINAL HOLE WAS DUG OUT.

BREWER HAD LED FOR MOST OF THE REGULAR 36 HOLES, BUT PLAYER TOOK THE LEAD FOR THE FIRST TIME AT THE 35TH HOLE. BREWER SQUARED THE MATCH AT THE 36TH AND THE FIRST TWO EXTRA HOLES WERE HALVED.

IN TOMORROW'S (FRIDAY) SEMI-FINALS PLAYER WILL MEET AUSTRALIAN PETER THOMSON, WHO STAGED A GREAT RECOVERY TODAY TO BEAT ARGENTIAN ROBERTO DE VICENZO, THE REIGNING BRITISH OPEN CHAMPION, BY ONE HOLE. THOMSON WON AFTER BEING FIVE DOWN AT THE 19TH.

THE OTHER SEMI-FINAL WILL BE AN ALL-AMERICAN AFFAIR BETWEEN ARNOLD PALMER AND BILLY CASPER. PALMER TODAY BEAT CANADIAN GEORGE KNUDSON FIVE AND FOUR AND CASPER CRUSHED AUSTRALIAN BRUCE DEVLIN NINE AND EIGHT.
