  • Description

A large rally was held on Sunday (5 March) in the southern Lebanon part of Sidon. It ended a week of commemorating the third anniversary of the death of a Popular Socialist Party deputy Maarouf Saad. On the same day, in the mountain resort of Aley, another rally marked the eighth anniversary of the coup which brought the ruling Baath Party to power in Syria.

SYNOPSIS: The big crowds at the Sidon rally included the Lebanese Prime Minister, Dr. Selim Hoss, and leaders of the lebanese Left and Palestinian movement. Maarouf Saad, the martyr they were remembering, was a former mayor of Sidon. He died after being shot leading a fishermen's protest match in the port. His killing helped spark off the civil war.

In the resort of Aley, just south of Beirut, the Syrian People's Party (PPS) organised the rally to celebrate the eighth anniversary of the coup which brought the ruling Baath Party to power in neighbouring Syria. The PPS is a Lebanese political party with strong ties with the Syrian Baath party. Members of other Lebanese Leftist parties attended the rally.

Among the speakers was a member of the Nasserite party. THE PPS was founded in 1932 to promote a 'Greater Syria' composed of Lebanon, Syria, Lrag, Jordan, Palestine and Cyprus.
