  • Description

Greek President George Papadopoulos attended a parade of troops from six nations of the North Atlantic Treaty Organisation, (NATO) at Kavalla in Northern Greece on Thursday (June 28). The parade marked the end of a two-week defence exercise, by NATO's allied Mobile Forces, which involved units from Belgium, Greece, Italy, United Kingdom, United States and West Germany.

They had been flown into Northern Greece and had been carrying out manoeuvres against an imagined aggressor on her norther borders.

President Papadopoulos was making his first public appearance, since he proclaimed Greece a republic on June 1st and named himself its temporary head. Speaking to allied commanders, he said that, although East-West negotiations might allow the reduction of NATO forces in Europe, the reductions must not undermine the unity of the alliance.

U.S. President Nixon and Mr. Leonid Brezhnev, First-Secretary of the Soviet Communist Party, have recently concluded a successful summit conference on disarmament. Also the 12 NATO and seven Warsaw Pact Governments are due to start serious talks on troops cuts at the end of October.
