  • Description

A SPECIAL TOURNAMENT OF SUMO WRESTLING WAS HELD IN TOKYO YESTERDAY (SATURDAY) IN HONOUR OF THE BIRTHDAY OF EMPEROR HIROHITO. SEVERAL GRAND CHAMPIONS REACHED THE FINAL IN THE YASUKUNI SHRINE SPECIAL RING.

SOME 3,000 SPECTATORS GATHERED TO WATCH THE FINAL BOUTS OF THE CONTEST, WHICH ORIGINALLY STARTED WITH 500 CONTESTANTS.

THE ANCIENT ART OF SUMO WRESTLING HAS BEEN POPULAR IN JAPAN FOR CENTURIES. THERE ARE NO DIVISIONS INTO WEIGHT CLASSES, AS IN WESTERN STYLE WRESTLING, AND THE CHAMPIONS ARE USUALLY DISTINGUISHED BY ENORMOUS BULK AND WEIGHT.

TWO OF THE MOST KEENLY CONTESTED BOUTS IN YESTERDAY'S PROGRAMME WERE BETWEEN GRAND CHAMPIONS KASHIWADE AND KITANOFUGI AND GRAND CHAMPIONS SADANOYAMA AND TAIHO.

THE POPULARITY OF WRESTLING HAS SURVIVED IN MANY ASIATIC COUNTRIES, PARTICULARLY JAPAN, WHERE THE FIRST MATCH RECORDED TOOK PLACE IN 23BC, THE VICTOR BEING SUKUNE, WHO HAS EVER SINCE BEEN REGARDED AS THE TUTELARY DEITY OF WRESTLERS.
