  • Description

In Bangladesh President Ziaur Rahman launched a major canal-building programme on Monday (3 December) aimed at freeing the country from the mercy of perennial floods and drought. The project is intended to double food production by 1985 making Bangladesh self-sufficient in food for the first time in recent history.

SYNOPSIS: Nearly thirty-five thousand people turned out at Aricha Ghat to participate in the first stage of the programme for the construction or clearance of some sixty major waterways. President Ziaur Rahman joined the workers to launch the new project.

In a fiery speech President Rahman asked the workers to put every effort into this new project which he described as the first stage of a 'revolution" to lift Bangladesh out of destitution. President Rahman then set the example by enthusiastically joining in the dig himself.

At least 500 miles (805 kilometres) of canals are to be built under a five-month programme which should enable the country to produce an extra two and a half million tons of grain a year. The move coincides with one of the most severe droughts to his Bangladesh this century and some three million tons of grain will have to be imported this year to avoid a food crisis.
