Background: The span...the world's longest suspension bridge...will link Brooklyn and Staten Island across the entrance to New York harbour. Both Brooklyn and Staten Island are boroughs of New York City.
The spinning was the second phase of construction of the 325-million-dollar bridge...scheduled for opening by the end of 1964.The bridge...which will have the world's longest suspension span of 4,260 feet, is expected to handle about 12,600,000 vehicles a day initially. It should reach its traffic-carrying capacity of 48-million vehicles a day by 1981.
The spinning began by the turning of a replies wheel by Robert Moser, chairman of the Triborough Bridge and Tunnel Authority, and by J.Donald Rollins, president of U-S Steel's American Bridge Division.Their signal set in motion eight 48-inch diameter spinning wheels. These will be used to weave 145-thousand miles of pencil-thin (0.196-inch diameter) wire into four 36-inch main cables. The job will take six months. The four cables will support huge steel trusser...which in turn will support the roadway. The cables themselves are slung from twin 690 ft high towers.
