  • Description

TORRENTIAL RAINS, VICIOUS HAILSTORMS, AND HURRICANE-FORCE WINDS LASHED ATHENS, GREECE, FOR FOUR HOURS EARLY NOV 6. THE STORM KILLED AT LEAST 39 PERSONS, ELEVEN ARE MISSING, 350 INJURED AND 2,951 HOMELESS.

HUNDREDS OF HOUSES AND SHOPS WERE FLOODED TO A DEPTH OF EIGHT FEET IN SOME PARTS OF THE ATHENS AREA. MANY OF THE DEAD WERE REPORTEDLY CAUGHT ASLEEP IN GROUND FLOOR BEDROOMS SUBMERGED BY THE SUDDEN SURGE OF FLOODWATER. OTHER VICTIMS WERE IN HOUSES THAT COLLAPSED UNDER THE SEVERE STORM, DURING WHICH HAILSTONES AS BIG AS GOLD BALLS RAINED DOWN.

DRAINS WERE BLOCKED BY FLOTSAM SWEPT BEFORE THE RUSHING WAYERS, AND STREETS QUICKLY BECAME TURBULENT WATERWAYS AS THE CEPHISUS AND ILISUSUS RIVERS ROSE AND SURGED THROUGH ATHENS AND ITS SUBURBS. MANY BRIDGES WERE BADLY DAMAGED, SOME BEYOND REPAIR, AND ROAD TRAFFIC AND TELECOMMUNICATIONS WITH SURROUNDING COMMUNITIES, INCLUDING THE PORT OF PIRAEUS, WERE DISRUPTED.

THE GREEK CABINET MET IN EMERGENCY SESSION TO CONSIDER RELIEF MEASURES AND QUEEN FREDERIKA TOURED THE SYRIKEN AREAS. A GREEK INTERIOR MINISTRY SPOKESMAN SAID IT WOULD BE DAYS BEFORE THE STORM'S TRUE IMPACT AND THE EXTENT OF THE DAMAGE COULD BE ASSESSED.
