  • Description

A procession of strikers, many of them postmen, tramwaymen and other public employees, marched in complete silence through central Brussels on Dec. 31st in mourning for the striker, Francois van der Strappen, who was shot and killed by a bystander during the previous day's struggle between strikers and mounted police outside the Sabena airline building in the centre of the city.

The procession was headed by standard bearers carrying two red flags draped with black crepe. They were followed by their comrades - both men and women - in ranks twelve abreast. Police were unobtrusive although strong patrols of foot and mounted police were at hand, in the side streets, in case of trouble.

Finally, the procession dispersed quietly near the North Railway Station. There were similar processions in other cities, but only in Liege, where a few windows were broken, was there any violence. A lull is expected in the strikes and demonstration until the New Year celebrations are over. But in a New Year's Eve broadcast, the Prime Minister, Mr. Eyskens, called on the strikers to resume work. He said the strike had been started by a badly informed section of the population. But the big majority of Belgians was attached to the principles of democracy, and the Government, he said, would not retreat in the face of violence.
