    Philippines President, Ferdinand Marcos, arrived in Singapore for a three day state visit and talks prior to next month's summit of leaders of the Association of Southeast Asian nations (ASEAN).

    On Thursday (29 January) Singapore and the Philippines issued a communique saying that threats of subversion within member countries of ASEAN would be reduced if economic development in the area was accelerated.

    The joint communique from President Marcos and Singapore Prime Minister, Lee Kuan Yew, said the great powers could play a positive and constructive role in the development efforts of the countries in the region, based on the principles of mutual benefits, non-interference and respect for sovereignty.

    President Marcos arrived in Singapore on Tuesday (27 January) with his wife Imelda. They were greeted at the airport by President Benjamin Shares and Lee Kuan Yew.

    At a state banquet following his arrival, President Marcos said the withdrawal of the United States from the Asian mainland -- with the exception of South Korea -- had made southeast Asia change its goals.

    President Marcos said the withdrawal of the Untied States from the Asian mainland -- apart from South Korea -- had made Southeast Asia change its goals. He said the region had the opportunity of deciding its own destiny for the first time in its history. A communique issued after the talks said accelerated economic development would reduce subversion threats within the region.
