  • Description

Numerous forest fires in the Northwestern areas of the United States, and neighbouring districts of Canada, are destroying thousands of acres of timber and have resulted from prolonged hot dry weather.

In two days last week the fires ravaged over 30 thousand acres in Washington States, with the Okangan National Forest among the worst hit areas, The fires are not confined to the one State and are destroying forests and crops in many regions.

More than a thousand men are fighting 20 fires in Washington State, and fire control supervisors have requested helicopters and bulldozers to help contain the outbreaks... many of which have been sparked off by lightning.

While regular and volunteer fire-fighters battle the fires in America's "northwest", reports from British Columbia in Canada indicate that there could well be as many as 500 forest in that state alone.

With temperature during the past few days constantly in the 80's and 90's and further hot weather forecast for this week, firefighters see little prospects of immediate success or relief from their efforts.
