  • Description

A sudden snowstorm caused rush hour chaos in Washington on Friday (8 February), prevented President Richard Nixon from going for a routine medical checkup, and forced United States Secretary of State Henry Kissinger and former Governor of New York Nelson Rockefeller to walk to a meeting at the White House.

President Nixon left the White House for should have been a twenty minute drive to Bethesda Naval Hospital. His car was turned back by the traffic jams caused by the icy roads.

The city was covered by five inches (12 1/2 centimetres) of snow.

Only one Senate Committee was able to meet on schedule and one Senator had to stand in for the Senate chaplain who was delayed by the storm. Many vehicles had to be abandoned, but the snow was enjoyed by some people. Many workers got an unexpected three day weekend, schoolchildren got the day off and motorists in search of scarce petrol found the queues greatly reduced.

SYNOPSIS: In many parts of the United States five inches of snow is nothing to worry about. But when it falls on Washington all at once -- the result is chaos, and people walking to work.

Friday's snow even made President Nixon miss a routine medical checkup.

Henry Kissinger who thinks nothing of flying to the Middle East, had to walk to the White House.

Senate business was held up -- with only one Committee meeting on schedule. The Senate recorder didn't make it, and for the first time in history the speeches were recorded on audio tape -- a sensitive issue with some Washington politicians.

Rush hour traffic was badly disrupted and workers were late getting home.

Many vehicles came to grief on the icy roads.

This police car had to be disentangled from truck.

But some people enjoyed the snow. Many workers got a three day weekend, queues outside garages for petrol were greatly reduced -- and many schoolchildren enjoyed an unexpected holiday.
