Background: The Rhodesian mining town of Shabani was reported still tense on Saturday (15 Jan) after a bloody riot earlier riot earlier in the week in which one African miner was shot dead by police, and nine others wounded.

The riot broke out after an industrial dispute closed the asbestos mine at Shabani -- one of the largest asbestos mines in the world.

Reports indicate that the police opened fire as they tried to escape from an angry crowd of striking miners who chased them with clubs and stones.

The riot occurred as the Pearce Commission began investigations in Rhodesia into the attitudes of Rhodesians towards the proposed terms of settlement between their country and Britain.

The Rhodesian Government says the riot was part of a widespread pattern of political agitation in Rhodesia.
