    The riot broke out after an industrial dispute closed the asbestos mine at Shabani -- one of the largest asbestos mines in the world.

    Reports indicate that the police opened fire as they tried to escape from an angry crowd of striking miners who chased them with clubs and stones.

    The riot occurred as the Pearce Commission began investigations in Rhodesia into the attitudes of Rhodesians towards the proposed terms of settlement between their country and Britain.

    The Rhodesian Government says the riot was part of a widespread pattern of political agitation in Rhodesia.

In the aftermath of the riot troops watched in case of further trouble. The riot occurred as Lord Pearce and his Commission began their study of Rhodesian attitudes towards the terms of settlement with Britain. The Rhodesian Government says the riot was part of a widespread pattern of political agitation.
