Background: The three-man United Nations Special mission on Aden held informal consultations in Geneva today (Friday) before the planned start of its hearings on the troubled territory due to get independence on 9 January as part of the South Arabian Federation.

The mission, headed by Mr. Manuel Perez Guerrero of Venezuela, appealed after arriving yesterday (Thursday) for Aden nationalists to co-operate in finding peaceful ways for Britain to withdraw from the territory.

Today a United Nations spokesman said there had been no response to the call, and in Aden an 48-hour strike began in protest at the mission's plan to consult the present South Arabian government, which nationalists claim is pro-British. Last April strikes and other incidents met the mission's abortive visit to Aden.
