Background: AS THE WAVE OF VIOLENCE CAME TO AN END IN THE NORTHERN RHODESIAN PROVINCE OF LUAPULA, AUG 23, THE POLICE TOOK SWIFT ACTION AND ROUNDED UP A LARGE NUMBER OF AFRICAN SUSPECTS FOR QUESTIONING. DURING THE TROUBLE FORT ROSEBERY HAS BEEN ONE OF THE HARDEST HIT AREAS WITH REPORTS OF ARSON SABOTAGE AND ROAD BLOCKING MOUNTING EACH DAY.

IN THE VILLAGE OF KABUTA-KOMBANIYA NEAR THE TOWN THE HEADQUARTERS OF THE UNITED NATIONAL INDEPENDENCE PARTY, LED BY KENNETH KAUNDA, WAS BURNT DOWN. ALTHOUGH MOST OF THE SUSPECTS ROUNDED UP HAVE BEEN UNIP SUPPORTERS THE POLICE SAY THE HEADQUARTERS WERE DESTROYED BY VILLAGERS WHO WERE TIRED OF WHAT THE PARTY WAS DOING IN THE AREA.

ONE OF THE MAIN TASKS AHEAD OF THE SECURITY FORCES IS TO CLEAR THE ROAD BLOCKS AND REMOVE THE BURNT VEHICLES. MOST OF THE LABOUR FOR THIS TASK IS PROVIDED BY THE SMALL AFRICAN VILLAGES ALONG THE ROADSIDE.

AT THE FORT ROSEBERY PRISON CAMP ALL SUSPECTS WHO HAVE NOT BEEN ABLE TO GIVE SATISFACTORY ANSWERS TO THE POLICE ARE HELD. SOME OF THE ACCUSED HAVE SAID THAT THEY ACTED ON THE ORDERS OF THEIR LOCAL UNIP CHIEFS. THE PARTY IS NOW BANNED IN MOST PARTS OF THE COUNTRY.

PARTY PRESIDENT KAUNDA SAID IN NDOLA AUG 24, THAT HIS CIVIL DISOBEDIENCE CAMPAIGN WILL CONTINUE EVEN IF HE IS SENT TO JAIL.
