  • Description

French Prime Minister Jacques Chirac's tour of Brittany was again marked by demonstrations against him by members of the CFDT and CGT General Workers Unions and other left wingers on Friday )16 January
It was the last day of M. Chirac's two day tour, during which he has visited all of Brittany's four departments. On the first day of his tour he was followed round a factory in Loudeac by a hundred militant CFDT and CGT union men who were holding an hour's work stoppage. On Saturday he visited the port of Brest where there were also large demonstrations. The men were demanding more money and the release of members of the CFDT's soldiers' committee who have been detained since they attempted to set up a trade union within the French armed forces.

    M. Chirac did not comment on the case of the soldiers but he made a speech warning the dangers of inflation were not past. He also sided with some of the area's farmers when he declared that the Common Market price increases for powdered milk were "insufficient" and "unfairly penalised milk producers".
