    PRESIDENT KENNETH KAUNDA OF ZAMBIA OFFICIATED AT A STATE HOUSE INVESTITURE CEREMONY IN LUSAKA ON MAY 25, DURING WHICH HE PRESENTED A NUMBER OF NEW ZAMBIAN HONOURS. THESE HONOURS, WHICH WERE ANNOUNCED LAST OCTOBER, CONSIST OF AWARDS TO 84 PEOPLE, INCLUDING 27 EUROPEANS.

    THERE ARE 27 MEDALS AND AWARDS IN ALL, WHICH WERE DESIGNED BY AN ARTIST IN THE GOVERNMENT INFORMATION DEPARTMENT. THESE MEDALS ARE PRODUCED LOCALLY BY DIE-CASTING SPECIALISTS.

    AMONG THOSE TO BE HONOURABLE ARE MANY WHO HAVE BEEN PROMINENT IN ZAMBIA'S STRUGGLE FOR INDEPENDENCE. SEVEN PRIESTS RECEIVED HONOURS, INCLUDING TWO IRISH-BORN ROMAN CATHOLICS, AND THE BRITISH-BORN HEAD OF THE UNITED CHURCH OF ZAMBIA, THE REVEREND COLIN MORRIS.

    AN EARLY SUPPORTER OF ZAMBIAN INDEPENDENCE, 83-YEAR-OLD SIR STEWART GORE BROWN WAS MADE A GRAND OFFICER OF THE COMPANION ORDER OF FREEDOM.

    NEW AWARDS WERE ALSO ANNOUNCED DURING THE LATER STAGES OF THE CEREMONY. THOSE HONOURED INCLUDE MRS. GABRIELLE ELLISON, WHO DESIGNED THE ZAMBIAN FLAGS AND THE HONOURS.
