    THE DEMONSTRATION BEGAN AT THE NEARBY TOWN OF DIXMUDE WITH AN ANNUAL RALLY IN MEMORY OF FLEMISH SOLDIERS KILLED IN WORLD WAR ONE. LATER, SEVERAL HUNDRED DEMONSTRATORS MOVED TO OSTEND.

    HUNDREDS OF BRITISH AND OTHER HOLIDAYMAKERS WATCHED AS THE FLEMISH-SPEAKERS PARADED THROUGH OSTEND, PROTESTING AGAINST THE USE OF FRENCH AT SEASIDE RESORTS.

    THE EXTREMIST FLEMISH NATIONALISTS GROUPS ARE DEMANDING THAT IN THE NORTHERN COSTAL AREA FLEMISH SHOULD BE USED IN CHURCH SERMONS, BANKS, CABARETS, CASINOS AND AT THE LOCAL RACECOURSE.

    TONIGHT POLICE USED FIREHOSES TO BREAK UP FIGHTING BETWEEN 400 NATIONALISTS AND FRENCH-SPEAKING HOLIDAYMAKERS OUTSIDE A CHURCH IN OSTEND. THE DEMONSTRATORS LATER DISPERSED.
