SYNOPSIS: Turkey -- playing from left to right -- kicked off in their European Championship qualifying match against Switzerland at Izmir on Sunday. The turks attacked strongly, driven on by an enthusiastic home crowd of about sixty thousand. But it was Switzerland who opened the score, with a goal from Muller.

Victory meant taking the lead in Group Six and the Swiss were keen to add to their score. They made frequent attacks, but ran up against a strong Turkish defence.

The Turks had the advantage of playing on home ground. Shortly before the half time whistle, Ismail put through an equaliser.

With the half-time score at one-all, the two sides took the field in the second half with added vigour. But the Turks proved the stronger side and Mehmet scored the winning goal. The victory made Turkey the joint leaders of Group Six with the Republic of Ireland.
