Background: The three main phases of the South Vietnamese Laos operation are indicated by the changing role of the main American supply base, Khe Sanh. Originally a supply base used to back up the forward South Vietnamese forces, it became a centre for the reception of the wounded. Now Khe Sanh itself is under attack from North Vietnamese artillery, and only a handful of American troops has been left to hold the base.
