  • Description

Nigeria's Fatai Ayinla, hard-hitting light-heavyweight, made a brave attempt to win a boxing gold medal in the Little Olympic boxing finals on Saturday night.

Ayinla was matched against the vastly experienced Dan Poznyak of the Soviet Union, and gave a good account in the first round. However, Poznyak proved his superiority and won easily on points.

Ayinla opened aggressively, doing all the forcing and throwing deft punches from all directions. But his inexperience showed, and the Soviet fighter landed a stinging right hook that sent Ayinla tottering in the ring.

Thereafter it was a more precise display, with Poznyak giving a fine display of studied punching. Poznyak won the European amateur light-heavyweight title for the second time this year.

Poznyak relentlessly wore Ayinla down, although both fighters seemed tired toward the final stages of the match.

Critics were impressed by Ayinla's display against his more experience opponent, and believe if the Nigerian coach Hogan Bassay can work on Ayinla he may gain honours in the 1968 Olympic Games.
