  • Description

THE DELAYS AT THE FRONTIER BETWEEN SPAIN AND GIBRALTAR CONTINUE TO PROVE FRUSTRATING FOR MOTORISTS PASSING FROM BOTH SIDES OF THE BORDER.THE CONTROL OF CARS HAS BEEN TIGHTENED SO THAT NOW ONLY ONE CAR AN HOUR IS ALLOWED THROUGH IN EACH DIRECTION.

ALTHOUGH THIS HAS HIT GIBRALTAR'S ECONOMY AND CUT THE TOURIST TRADE THERE, IT HAS ALSO AFFECTED SPANISH TOWNS NEAR THE BORDER.THE WORST HIT SO FAR IS PROBABLY LA LINEA.TODAY A VISNEWS CAMERAMAN WHO HAS BEEN FILMING IN GIBRALTAR JOINED THE QUEUE OF CARS AND BUSES AT THE BORDER AND CROSSED TO LA LINEA TO FILM THE EFFECT OF THE BAN ON THE SPANISH COMMUNITY THERE.

USUALLY THE FLOW OF CARS ACROSS THE BORDER HAD FLOWED ALMOST WITHOUT A BREAK FOR FRONTIER FORMALITIES.NOW THE SPANISH POLICE SAY THE CLOSE SCRUTINY OF EACH CAR IS TO CHECK ON CONTRABAND.

LA LINEA APPEARS TO BE AS BADLY AFFECTED AS GIBRALTAR.BARS AND HOTELS, NORMALLY CROWDED WITH TOURISTS ESCAPING FROM THE WINTER WEATHER, AS NEARLY DESERTED.SHOP OWNERS, THE WORST-HIT BY THE LACK OF TOURISTS AND THE DAILY FLOW OF SHOPPERS FROM GIBRALTAR, ARE HOLDING SALES, OFFERING GOODS AT REDUCED RATES...

RETURNING FROM SPAIN TO GIBRALTAR THERE ARE MORE DELAYS.THERE USED TO BE HUNDREDS OF BUSES AND CARS CROSSING DAILY -- NOW THERE ARE LESS THAT TWENTY....
