  • Description

The massive relief operation to East Pakistan has gathered momentum with the arrival in Dacca of giant transport aircraft carrying British and United States helicopters and tons of relief supplies.

The helicopters were assembled at Dacca airport and have carried out their first mercy mission.

A week after the typhoon and tidalwave disaster the death toll was put officially at more than 166,000 while unofficial estimates put it as high as two million.

Britain mounted a massive aid operation from Singapore and an advance party of 50 troops and two small helicopters was flown in. The helicopters were used initially to plan operations over the flooded islands by bigger helicopters which are still to arrive. American helicopters began flying aid to devastated areas.

The Commander of the British aid task force, brigadier P. Ovens, officer in charge of a commando group in Singapore, was setting up his headquarters at Patuakhali on the mainland to the west of Bhola Island, one of the worst hit areas.
