    THE OPENING OF THE GIANT NEW ICE-STADIUM IN INNSBRUCK, AUSTRIA ON SATURDAY, HERALDS THE APPROACH OF THE 1964 WINTER OLYMPICS.THEY WILL BE HELD IN AND AROUND INNSBRUCK, FROM JANUARY 29 TO FEBRUARY 19 NEXT YEAR.

    THE STADIUM, SPECIALLY BUILT FOR THE GAMES, HAS THE LARGEST ARTIFICIAL RINK IN THE WORLD.IT COVERS 10,000 SQUARE METRES AND HAS ROOM FOR 10,500 SPECTATORS.IT HAS TAKEN THREE YEARS TO BUILD, AT A COST OF MORE THAN GBP1 MILLION STERLING.THE OPENING CEREMONY WAS PERFORMED BY THE AUSTRIAN TRADE MINISTER, DR.FRITZ BOCK, WHO ANNOUNCED THAT ALL BUILDING FOR THE GAMES WERE NOW FINISHED.

    (THE AUTHORITIES ARE NEAR THE END OF 'OPERATION OLYMPICS 1964', WHICH BEGAN BACK IN 1959 WHEN INNSBRUCK WAS FIRST CHOSEN FOR THE GAMES.SINCE THEN AN ARMY OF WORKMEN HAS BEEN ENGAGED IN CONSTRUCTING THE VARIOUS FACILITIES, HELPED AT TIMES BY MORE THAN 500 SOLDIERS.THEY HAVE EVEN DISMANTLED A HOTEL WHICH STOOD IN THE WAY OF THE SKI JUMP AT THE NEARBY BERG ISEL MOUNTAIN.HUNDREDS OF TREES HAVE BEEN CUT DOWN AND THOUSANDS OF TONS OF EARTH MOVED TO MAKE WAY FOR THE SKI AND SLALOM COURSES.)
    TO ACCOMMODATE THE 3,000 COMPETITORS AND OFFICIALS FROM 40 COUNTRIES, A VILLAGE OF MORE THAN 500 HOUSES HAS BEEN BUILT.NO EFFORT OR EXPENSE HAS BEEN SPARED TO ENSURE THAT FACILITIES AT THE NEXT WINTER OLYMPICS ARE THE BEST EVER.
