  • Description

TWENTY-NINE MEN DIED IN A FIRE WHICH SWEPT THROUGH TWO STOREYS OF A MEN'S NIGHT SALVATION ARMY HOSTEL IN MELBOURNE ON SATURDAY (AUGUST 13) NIGHT.

MELBOURNE'S CHIEF FIRE OFFICER, MR. J. PATTERSON, SAID THE NEXT DAY THAT MANY OF THE VICTIMS DIED BECAUSE THEY WERE TOO OLD OR TOO DRUNK TO SAVE THEMSELVES. THE FIRE CHIEF THOUGHT THAT IF NORMAL PEOPLE HAD BEEN IN THE BUILDING ONLY A FEW LIVES MIGHT HAVE BEEN LOST. HE SAID HE BELIEVED THAT ABOUT HALF THE MEN WHO STAYED AT THE SIX SHILLINGS (75 CENTS) A NIGHT HOSTEL, THE WILLIAM BOOTH MEMORIAL HOME, WERE HEAVY DRINKERS.

THE CAUSE OF THE FIRE HAD NOT BEEN ESTABLISHED ON SUNDAY ALTHOUGH FIRE OFFICERS BELIEVED IT MIGHT HAVE STARTED FROM A CIGARETTE FALLING AMONG BEDCLOTHES. APART FROM THE DEAD 13 MEN WERE INJURED -- ONE OF THEM CRITICALLY.
