  • Description

Women in Syria will soon be dong duty as police officers for the first time. On Saturday (18 November) in the capital, Damascus, the Syrian Minister of the Interior, Brigadier Adnan Dabbagh officiated at the graduation of the country's first squad of policewomen.

SYNOPSIS: The occasion was marked by a large military parade watched by Brigadier Dabbagh and senior police offices.

The focus of attention was the well-drilled policewomen. The squad of women of parade was the first product of an intensive training programmes. Brigadier Dabbagh took the salute at the parade.

After the march-past the policewoman displayed their powers in unarmed combat with a number of judo exercises. They were showing the crowd some of the skills they had learnt during a course of instruction in Damascus and the Jordanian capital of Amman. High-ranking police officers have not designated a special set of duties for the new recruits. The strict training schedules which the graduates showed the crowd were necessary because the policewomen will be taking posts currently filled by men.

The oath of allegiance was the culmination of an impressive display. Western observers see the presence of women in the police force as a pioneering trend in Syria.
