  • Description

As the threat of civil war in the Congo increases - a move aimed at restoring unity. Members of the United Nations Conciliation Commission met for the first time on Congolese soil on Jan 11th in Leopoldville. Chairman of the meeting was President Kasavubu, in spite of Congolese opposition to the Commission.

Talks continued for two hours - most of the time being taken up by a long report from Mr Kasavubu's secretary, Mr Luyeye. Our cameraman asked Mr Kasavubu afterwards about the results of the conference. In reply, Mr Kasavubu opened his arms, smiled, and said "Que voulezvous..?" apparently hinting that he was not hopeful about the Commission's efforts.

Among the Commission members are representatives from Liberia, Sudan, India, Pakistan, Ghana and Senegal.
