DR. KONDRAD ADENAUER, EUROPE'S ELDER STATESMAN AND THE MAN WHO FORGED THE WEST GERMANY OF?

  • Description

DR. KONDRAD ADENAUER, EUROPE'S ELDER STATESMAN AND THE MAN WHO FORGED THE WEST GERMANY OF TODAY FROM THE ASHES OF WORLD WAR II, DIED AT HIS HOME NEAR BONN THIS AFTERNOON. HE WAS 91 YEARS OLD, AND HAD BEEN GRAVELY ILL WITH INFLUENZA AND BRONCHITIS FOR A WEEK.

THE DEATH OF THE MAN WHO BECAME CHANCELLOR AT THE AGE OF 73, AND WHO HELD THE POST FOR 14 YEARS, WAS ANNOUNCED BY A SPOKESMAN FROM HIS OWN CHRISTIAN DEMOCRATIC PARTY. THE FUNERAL, THE OFFICIAL ADDED, WOULD BE A STATE ONE HELD ON THE ORDERS OF THE WEST GERMAN PRESIDENT, DR. LUEBKE.

DR. ADENAUER'S BODY WILL BE TAKEN FROM HIS HOME AT RHOENDORF ON SATURDAY FOR A TWO-DAY LYING-IN-STATE IN THE CABINET MEETING HALL OF THE CHANCELLERY. ON MONDAY THE COFFIN WILL BE TAKEN TO COLOGNE CATHEDRAL, WHERE IT WILL REMAIN UNTIL IT IS CALLED UP THE RHINE FOR BURIAL ON TUESDAY.

DR. ADENAUER WAS BORN IN COLOGNE AND WAS LORD MAYOR OF THE CITY FOR 17 YEARS UNTIL 1933. HE WAS THEN SACKED BY THE NAZIS AND TWICE IMPRISONED. HE BECAME LORD MAYOR ONCE AGAIN AFTER THE WAR, ONLY TO BE DISMISSED THIS TIME BY THE BRITISH ADMINISTRATION FOR WHAT WAS TERMED AT THE TIME AS "NON-CO-OPERATION". HE BECAME CHANCELLOR OF WEST GERMANY IN 1949, AT AN AGE WHEN MOST MEN ARE ALREADY IN RETIREMENT, AND HELD THE POST UNTIL OCTOBER, 1963.

FLAGS THROUGHOUT THE COUNTRY WERE AT HALF MAST TODAY, WITH ONE EXCEPTION. OUTSIDE THE ALLIED CONTROL AUTHORITY BUILDING IN BERLIN, THE FLAGS OF THE THREE WESTERN ALLIES WERE DIPPED AS A MARK OF RESPECT. BUT THE FLAG OF THE SOVIET UNION CONTINUED TO FLY AT THE TOP OF THE MAST.
