  • Description

DESCRIBED AS ONE OF THE HIGHEST SUPPLY DROPS, THE RAF TODAY (FRIDAY) DROPPED THE MATERIAL TO BUILD TWO MOUNTAIN HUTS ON MOUNT KENYA. AT ALMOST 1600 FEET ON THE SNOW-COVERED PEAKS OF THE MOUNTAIN, AN RAF BEVERLEY PLANE PERFORMED SOME OF THE MOST INTRICATE FLYING FOR THE PRECISION DROP IN A SHELTERED VALLEY BETWEEN THE CRAGGY PEAKS.

ALMOST THREE TONS OF BUILDING MATERIAL WERE SUCCESSFULLY DROPPED ON TWO PRESELECTED POSITIONS WHERE LAND RESCUE TEAMS OF THE RAF AND MEMBERS OF THE MOUNTAIN CLUB OF KENYA WERE WAITING TO COLLECT IT. THE HUTS WILL SERVE AS A SHELTER FOR FUTURE INTREPID CLIMBERS ON THIS, THE HIGHEST MOUNTAIN IN KENYA WITH ITS TWELVE GLACIERS.

A NUMBER OF DUMMY RUNS HAD TO BE MADE FIRST TO SPOT THE POSITION - MARKED BY FLARES AND SIGNAL LIGHTS. THEN SIX RUNS WERE MADE TO DROP THE MATERIAL. UNKNOWN AT THE TIME OF THE AIR DROP, A MAN WAS SERIOUSLY ILL AT THE TOP CAMP WITH PNEUMONIA AND REQUIRED AN IMMEDIATE SUPPLY OF OXYGEN. IT WAS NOT UNTIL THE RETURN TO BASE IN NAIROBI THAT THIS INFORMATION HAD BEEN PASSED BY RADIO FROM THE MOUNTAIN TEAM. THE RAF IMMEDIATELY BECAME AIRBORNE AGAIN AND VENTURED INTO THE CRAGGY HEIGHTS TO DROP THIS LIFE SAVING OXYGEN.

LATER A HELICOPTER BASED IN NAIROBI TWICE ATTEMPTED TO LAND NEAR THE STRICKEN MAN AND EVENTUALLY SUCCEEDED IN TAKING HIM OFF THE MOUNTAIN TO HOSPITAL.
