Background: Fifty fishing boats, including two from Denmark, joined the environmental group, Greenpeace's craft, Sirius, in a floating demonstration against acid waste dumping near Bremerhaven on February 27. Greenpeace say 12,000 tons of titanium dioxide is dumped in the North Sea, daily. On December 15, 1983, Greenpeace blockaded the Kronos Titan loading pier near Bremerhaven to try and prevent dumping vessels leaving for the open sea. One dumping vessel broke through the protest blockade on that occasion. The latest protest was called by Greenpeace and the West German Fishermen's Association to try to prevent any extension of dumping approvals which are due to run out on March 15. Greenpeace said they held a meeting with West German officials after the harbour protest, and were told dumping will stop in two to three months when a recycling plant for waste is constructed. The Greenpeace vessel, Sirius, which is normally berthed in Amsterdam, made its way to Hamburg after the protest.
