Plans are going ahead in Cairo to elect Mr. Anwar Sadat as successor to the late President Gamal Abdel Nasser. Mr. Sadat was officially nominated at a meeting of the 150-member Central Committee of the Arab Socialist Union in Cairo on October 6.
Mr. Sadat -- a 51 year old ex-soldier who helped to plot the 1952 revolution against the monarchy -- received the unanimous backing of the Central Committee.
President Mr. Sadat's name to the meeting, the Speaker of the U.A.R.'s National Assembly, Dr. Labib Shukair said the nation must avoid a vacuum of leadership at all costs.
He was supported by the Minister of Social Affairs and the National Assembly, Dr. Diya Dawud, and Mr. Kamal Ramzy Stino.
In a policy statement, the committee reaffirmed the nation's determination for the liberation of all occupied Arab territories in a continuation of President Nasser's policies. The statement said the Egyptian people were standing firmly behind the Palestine revolution.
The committee's statement also paid tribute to the Soviet Union for its firm support to the Arabs and expressed the Egyptian Peoples determination to preserve and develop these relations.
