  • Description

THE SPANISH GOVERNMENT IS MAKING STRENUOUS EFFORTS TO INDUSTRIALIZE THE CAMPO DE GIBRALTAR AREA, CLOSE TO GIBRALTAR. THE AREA HAD BEEN IMPOVERISHED IN THE PAST AND MANY OF ITS MEN HAVE HAD TO SEEK WORK IN GIBRALTAR. ONE THEORY PUT FORWARD FOR MADRID'S DETERMINATION TO IMPROVE THE AREA IS TO LESSEN THE DEPENDENCE THAT THE LOCAL LABOUR FORCE HAS ON THE ADJACENT BRITISH COLONY. AN ESTIMATED FIVE-THOUSAND SPANIARDS STILL WORK IN GIBRALTAR, DESPITE THE CURRENT ANGLO-SPANISH DISPUTE OVER THE FUTURE OF THE COLONY.

SO FAR SPAIN HAS SPENT AN ESTIMATED GBP36-MILLION STERLING ON INDUSTRIAL PROJECTS SUCH AS FACTORIES, AN OIL REFINERY AND A DAM. NEW HOUSING DEVELOPMENT IS ALSO UNDERWAY. THE MADRID GOVERNMENT INTENDS TO SPEND ANOTHER GBP40-MILLION STERLING IN THE NEXT FOUR YEARS. PRIVATE INDUSTRY IS ALSO INTERESTED IN THE CAMPO DE GIBRALTAR AREA. MORE THAN A DOZEN COMPANIES HAVE ASKED THE GOVERNMENT FOR PERMITS TO BUILD AND OPERATE PLANTS THERE. TOTAL PROJECTED INVESTMENTS BY THE COMPANIES AMOUNT TO GBP10-MILLION STERLING WITH MOST OF THE MONEY TO GO INTO TEXTILE AND PLASTICS PLANTS, FRUIT AND VEGETABLE CANNERIES, BUILDING MATERIALS, PRODUCTION AND COLD STORAGE PLANTS.
