Background: The President issued after the meeting, hosted by Saudi Arabia's King Khalid who took part briefly, the two leaders said the committee to co-ordinate policies towards Israel, after a two-day summit meeting in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, on Tuesday (22 April).

In a statement issued after the meeting, hosted by Saudi Arabia's King Khalid who took part briefly, the two leaders said the committee would consist of the Egyptian Vice-President, Air Vice-Marshal Hosny Mubarak and the Syrian Prime Minister, Mahmoud Al-Ayoubi.

It also said President Anwar Sadat of Egypt and President Hafez Al-Assad of Syria had agreed to avoid any action which might obstruct joint efforts in pursuit to Arab objectives and they considered that the "next state requires the closest co-operation between Syria and Egypt".

The meeting was the first top level Arab effort to co-ordinate polices towards Israel after the failure of United States Secretary of State Henry Kissinger's step-by--step peace negotiations last month.
