  • Description

THE UNITED STATES GOVERNMENT, IN ITS EFFORTS TO CONTROL AUTOMOBILE SAFETY, HAS SAID THAT ALL CARS MUST HAVE SOME KIND OF RESTRAINT SYSTEM BUILT INTO THE 1973 MODELS.

AIR BAGS, A RELATIVELY CHEAP AND HIGHLY EFFICIENT FORM OF IMPACT PREVENTION, SEEM TO BE THE ONLY PRACTICAL SOLUTION TO THE PROPOSED REGULATION. THE BAGS ARE DESIGNED TO INFLATE ON IMPACT AND PREVENT THE OCCUPANTS FROM SMASHING THROUGH THE WINDSHIELD. HOWEVER, A SAFETY RESEARCHER AT WAYNE STATE UNIVERSITY IN DETROIT SAYS THAT RECENT EXPERIMENTS WITH THE AIR BAG SHOW THAT IT COULD CAUSE SERIOUS INJURY TO CHILDREN WHO ARE IN THE CAR AT THE TIME OF AN ACCIDENT.
