  • Description

President Julius Nyerere of Tanzania said on Monday (5 February) that his troops were ready to invade Uganda if necessary 'to ensure our territorial integrity'. There's been fierce fighting along the border, and President Idi Amin has accused Tanzania of occupying three areas inside Uganda -- but President Nyerere has vigorously denied the charges.

SYNOPSIS: President Nyerere made one of his strongest attacks so far on Uganda during a speech to mark the second anniversary of Tanzania's ruling political party, the Chama Cha Mapinduzi.

He emphasised that Tanzania would not enter Uganda with the intention of over throwing President Amin. Ugandans had sufficient reasons to topple Amin, he added, because their President had been responsible for slaughtering thousands of people. But is was not Tanzania's responsibility to intervene -- nor to defend Amin when ugandans decided to throw him out.

President Nyrere warned that if Tanzania did send troops into Uganda it would be because President Amin was making threats similar to those which preceded his invasion of the Kagera Salient last year. At that time, Nyerere vowed that Tanzania would not only repel Uganda from the area but would not rest until Amin had been removed from power. He said that would be the only way of ensuring peace in the region.

There was applause when President Nyerere announced that all Ugandan forces had been driven out of the Kagera Salient.
