One of London's biggest-ever road improvement schemes - covering the Hyde Park Corner, Park Lane and Marble Arch area- is now will under way. The first stage of the 3 million operation is complete and on Oct 24 the second stage begins.
Also coming into force Oct 24 are new traffic routes in the area. Here, London traffic is at its densest and extra police will be moved into see that the big re-routing of traffic goes off as smoothly as possible. Park Lane and the East Carriage Drive of Hyde Park will become parallel one-way roads.
300 men are at work on the scheme. With the aid of a central concrete mixing yard and a steel-cutting and bending plant both close by in Hyde Park- they have so far laid two miles of new road and three miles of new sewers and drains.
A major feature is the construction at hyde Park Corner of a 1,000 ft. twin two-lane underpass linking Piccadilly and Knightsbridge.
