Background: Italy's vittorio Brambilla won the Austrian Formula One Grand Prix on Sunday (17 August) after the race was stopped at the end of the 2?ch lap.

Heavy rain forced officials to abandon the race after only 60 per cent of the distance had been completed.

Brambilla's win was his first in formula one racing and he fully earned it, mastering the treacherous conditions and fighting his way to the front from the fourth row of the starting grid.

Brambilla was jubilant after getting the chequered flag. In fact, he was so elated that while driving to the pits he crashed his car into a barrier, later admitting that he'd taken his hands off the wheel to wave to the crowd.

British drivers filled the placing behind Brambilla's March. James Hunt (Hesketh) was second and Tom Pryce (shadow) was third.

Austria's Niki Lauda was sixth increasing his lead in the current World Drivers' championship.

There was total confusion when the race was halted. Official argued for 25 minutes over whether the stoppage would be permanent one or merely an interruption until the rain eased.

The final decision to award the race to Brambilla was welcomed by a sigh of relief by most drivers, who claim it should have ended earlier.
