  • Description

The valley of the Po - Northern Italy's great river - is prone to annual flooding, and the inhabitants of its flat lands are normally prepared for it.

This year, however, the flooding took a different form. Confined originally to the delta area, it was caused by gale-lashed tides of sea water which 'backed-up' the river and burst protective dykes.

Although there were no casualties, hundreds of Italians were rendered homeless and thousands of acres flooded.

The situation was aggregated by the 'normal' flooding which ensued with torrential rains. At one stage all the 30,000-acre island of Polesine Camerini was under water. Its 5,000 resident were evacuated to Porto Tolle, a town of 23,000 which itself was in danger.
